Hire an In-House AI Team or Use a Partner?

Sequencing build, buy and borrow for AI capability

Most organisations should not choose between an in-house AI team and a partner. They should sequence them. Use a partner to deliver the first working systems and transfer the know-how, then hire the roles you now understand. Hiring first, before the use cases are proven, is the most common and most expensive mistake.

My board wants us to hire a head of AI and five engineers this year. Others say use a consultancy. What actually works?

Hiring a team before you know what it will build usually produces a capable group with nothing to own. The talent market for senior AI roles in the UAE is tight and slow, and a team without proven use cases tends to build demos.

Borrow capability to learn what you need, then buy the roles you can now describe precisely.
  1. Months 0 to 3: a partner, or a fractional Chief AI Officer, sets direction and delivers one or two pilots with your people embedded.
  2. Months 3 to 9: hire the specific roles those pilots exposed, often a product owner and a data engineer before any researcher.
  3. Month 9 onward: the partner steps back to governance and specialist support.

How do I stop the partner becoming permanent?

Write the exit into the contract. Name the internal owners from day one, make knowledge transfer a deliverable with acceptance criteria, and measure the partner on how much your team can run without them by a fixed date.
